Most Indonesian household money sits in savings and time deposits, not in shares. That makes this comparison more relevant to most people than any other.
The Comparison in One Table
Aspect | Time deposit | Money market fund |
|---|---|---|
| Return | Interest fixed in advance | Follows net asset value, nothing fixed in advance |
| Insurance | Insured up to set limits and conditions | NOT covered by deposit insurance |
| Liquidity | Locked for a term; early withdrawal usually incurs a penalty | Redeemable on trading days, per the prospectus |
| Managed by | A bank | An investment manager licensed by the Financial Services Authority |
| Who holds the money | The issuing bank | A custodian bank separate from the investment manager |
How Is the Return Formed?
With a time deposit, interest is fixed in advance for a set term. You know the figure before placing the money.
With a money market fund, nothing is fixed in advance. The value follows the net asset value per unit, which moves with the prices of instruments in the portfolio.
Liquidity and Penalties
A time deposit is locked for a term. Withdrawal before maturity generally incurs a penalty under the issuing bank's terms.
A money market fund can be redeemed on trading days, but the payment period is set in the prospectus and is not always immediate.
Protection: Deposit Insurance or Custodian Bank?
This is the most widely misunderstood point, and the difference is real.
Time deposits are covered by the Deposit Insurance Corporation up to set limits and conditions. If the issuing bank fails, there is a compensation scheme within those limits.
Money market funds are NOT covered by deposit insurance. What a fund has instead is asset segregation: investors' money is held by a custodian bank separate from the investment manager. That segregation protects safekeeping; it does not guarantee value.
A money market fund cannot be described as safer than a time deposit. The two sit within different frameworks of protection.
How Are They Taxed?
The tax treatment of deposit interest and of fund gains is governed by different rules that can change. Check the prevailing rules from official sources before calculating a net outcome.
When Does a Time Deposit Fit Better?
When certainty of the figure matters more than potential return.
When the money genuinely will not be touched before maturity.
When the amount sits within insured limits and that is a primary consideration.
When Does a Money Market Fund Fit Better?
When the money may be needed at short notice without a term penalty.
When the investor accepts that the outcome is not fixed in advance.
When the investor understands the value can fall.
Past performance does not guarantee future performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is safer, a money market fund or a time deposit?
They sit within different frameworks of protection, so neither can be called safer. Deposits are insured up to a limit; money market funds are not.
Are money market funds covered by deposit insurance?
No. What a fund has is asset segregation at a custodian bank, which protects safekeeping rather than guaranteeing value.
Is there a penalty for early redemption?
There is no term penalty as with a deposit, but the redemption payment period is set in the prospectus and is not always immediate.
Which gives a more certain return?
A time deposit, because its interest is fixed in advance. A money market fund fixes nothing in advance and its value can change.
How are they taxed?
Deposit interest and fund gains are governed by different rules that can change. Check the prevailing rules from official sources.
When does a time deposit fit better?
When certainty of the figure matters more than potential return, and when the money genuinely will not be touched before maturity.
